Live action
video game adaptations despite being equally as popular as comic books have
sadly not caught that lucky break like their comic book counterparts have to
become the new hub directors go to for content and inspiration.
It’s been
nothing but less than stellar reviews from Mario World back in the 90’s to most
recently Assasins Creed (one I rooted strong for thanks to that spectacular
trailer). So yeah, I am really hoping
on that one live action adaptation that will come and set the stage for others.
Enter Tomb Raider.
Imagine my
excitement learning Tomb Raider was getting redone. Hearing it was going to be
heavily inspired by the recent pair of games. That it will star Alicia Vikander
as Lara Croft. Fast forward to today, I sit through near two minutes of its first
trailer and came away feeling major un-impressed.
Something
about the trailer just did not sit with me despite having all the recipes of
the positively reviewed games it is inspired by. Yet, considering the caliber
of movie trailers dropping every day, this one felt like it belonged in the
2000’s. In fact, even the trailer of the original movie starring Anjelina Jolie
looks better compared to this and that one was made in the early 2000’s. Then
again, who knows, that could turn around and be a good thing. I mean look at
all the buzz the first trailer of Assasins Creed generated compared to how the
movie turned out hence going by that logic, Tomb Raider could turn out to be
the s#!t despite a lackluster first trailer. Fingers crossed.
