Earlier this week, Apple took the
wraps off the hotly anticipated iPhone 8 iPhone Edition iPhone X
along with the iPhone 7s iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s Plus iPhone 8 Plus, and as is usually the case during Apple unveils, the internet collectively
lost its s#!t,
with some marveled by the trio and others taking non-stop jabs.
Fun Fact: No other OEM sees the
level of criticism Apple/the iPhone does, yet, 90% of folks closet iPhone
lovers.
So, If you are that closet he or she secretly considering one of the
latest from Apple, here is a fairly in depth look at how they differ from one
another and hopefully this will help you decide whether to fork out that extra
$$$ for…
the X ($1000/NGN365k-400k
for the 64GB and $1149/NGN419k-425k for the 256GB),
or settle for a cheaper 8
($700/NGN255-265k for the 64GB and $849/NGN309-319k for the 256GB),
or plop in between with
the 8 Plus ($800/NGN292k-NGN302k for the 64GB and $949/NGN346k-366k).
As far as similarities go
All three phones now feature glass backs. A hardware feature Apple originally
featured on the 4 and 4s but did away with on the 5, and with glass backs, come
the ability to charge wirelessly (something that would not have been possible
with Aluminum backed phones like on the 6,6s and 7), and all of them have fast
charging capability, meaning you can go from 0 to 50% with just 30minutes of
charging.
The glass featured on the display of the X, 8 and 8 Plus is much more
durable than those on the 7 and 7 Plus as they are supposedly 50% harder.
All three are IP67 rated, meaning
they can withstand being submerged in 3ft of water for up to 30 minutes. They
all feature the same Apple A11 chip ergo have the same processing power
although, the iPhone 8 is rumored to feature a 2GB Ram as opposed to the 8 Plus
and X which will both have 3GB RAM.
The X, 8 and 8 Plus all sport 12 MP
camera sensors though only the 8 Plus and X have dual cameras and allow
portrait mode (the X taking it a notch further by enabling portrait mode for
the selfie lens as well). There are several key differences in their methods of
implementation; where the X has a lower aperture on its telephoto zoom lens therefore
ensuring better quality pictures in low light and also capable of dual optical
image stabilization, the 8 Plus has only single OIS. All three have 7MP lenses.
Now, how do they differ from one
another? The most obvious one is the display, i.e. the overall form factor of
the devices. For one, the border of the iPhone X is made of stainless steel,
while that of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is made with Aluminum 7000 (like the one
on the 7 and 7 plus). As far as colors go, both the 8 and 8 Plus come in
silver, space gray and gold while the X only comes in silver and space gray
(who knows, we may see a project red version further down the road).
Comfort-wise, the iPhones 8 and X
can accommodate one handed usage, the 8 Plus on the other hand won’t be easy
but then again, there is that reachability function.
The X is the thickest of the trio,
measuring in at 7.7mm, followed by the 8 plus at 7.5mm and the 8 at 7.3mm.
Varying thickness necessary to accommodate better internals respectively.
With the X, a user is guaranteed a
top to bottom, edge to edge, full bezelless experience with a cutout at the top
to house the top sensors, speaker, mic and front facing camera. On the 8 and 8
Plus it’s a design that 7 and 7 plus owners would find all too familiar (after
all, the 8 and 8 Plus are really technically the 7s and 7s Plus). But the
actual display technology is different, where on the iPhone X you get an OLED display;
meaning colors are going to be a lot more vibrant and there’s an infinite
contrast ratio; the blacks are pure blacks as each pixel can be turned off
individually, the 8 and 8 Plus employ the usual LCD found on its predecessors. The
X has a 458ppi, the 8 Plus 401ppi and 8 a 326ppi.
For security and occasional payment
functionality, where the 8 and 8 Plus use a finger print sensor that has become
a staple of the modern day Smartphone, the X does away with the finger print ID and pushes
the envelope with face ID. Whereby it employs its front facer for face ID and
unlocking of the device by making a3D map model of your face, storing the data
locally on the device and using it to unlock your phone, make payments/Apple
Pay, or (a new one) make Animojis; where you animate a limited number of emojis
using your face (think talking tom but apart from voice capture, it now
captures facial expressions).
As far as battery life goes, the 8
and 8 plus are packing the same as the 7 and 7 Plus and according to Apple, the
X will feature one that is 2hrs better than them (exactly what that means I.
do. Not. Know.)
Release date…the 8 and 8 plus will
be available starting September 27th. And the X November 3rd
(ironically, another X will be released 4 days later, the Xbox one X)
Minor gripes I have with the X are..
The lack
of the finger print sensor; the face ID in theory may be good, but
generally proves slower and less convenient than finger ID. Where one could
surreptitiously bring out their phone and start fiddling say beneath the desk,
or have your phone unlock right from pulling it out your pocket and your finger
automatically finding the home button, now you’d have to settle for pin unlock
or hold your phone in front of your face. I don’t care how fast they say it
will be, it is still slower than finger print sensor.
The cutout
at the top; that cutout literally obstructs a portion of your content. Whether
you are consuming video or playing games, that cutout will not be filled out with
black bars like on the essential phone.
These two gripes may prove big
enough to steer potential buyers like me towards the equally grand iPhone 8
Plus…yeah, and there’s also that steep price. So which of the trio will you be getting?
Here is one of many memes that absolutely cracked me up.
