Apple ventured into the long overdue AMOLED display territory with the
much anticipated iPhone X and fans all but ran crazy with excitement.
Finally,
an end to those LCD displays Apple has stubbornly clung on to, and hello to
crisper looking displays on iPhones….well, dear iPhone enthusiasts, before you
break out the Alomo, get this, we have not seen the last of LCD displays on
iPhones.
Per WSJ, Apple is looking into buying a new type of LCD display from
Japan Display Inc. (JDI) called “Full Active LCD” that would allow for a near
bezel-less design similar to that found on the Apple iPhone X.
JDI recently announced the “Full Active” panel and says the design can
reduce the width of the bottom bezel down to as narrow as the other three
sides, potentially reducing the size of smartphones using this display type. Therefore,
compared to current LCD displays found in the iPhone 8 Plus and below which
require extra millimeters of border area to house necessary drivers resulting
in big bezels, the Full Active LCD panel won’t require that extra space,
solving the issue of big-bordered LCD displays. Japan Display says the new
displays only need 0.5 millimeters of border area and can be curved to fit the
scheme Apple went with the iPhone X.
It is common knowledge that the AMOLED displays found on the iPhone X is
supplied by Samsung at a hefty price per display so, with this move, could
Apple be looking to cut ties with Samsung and in the process seek out other
display options. As far as OLED options go, Apple is already investing big
money to get LG’s OLED (or POLED) display department off the ground but that
likely won’t happen until 2019, hence Apple’s inclination to look at other
options beyond just Samsung.
