There won't be an Adult or King Groot in Avengers Infinity Wars

Remember baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and how he (or) it stole the show with all that cuteness? Remember at the end of GOTG Vol. 2 he grows into Teen Groot? Remember popular rumor has it that Avengers Infinity wars is going to be a star (or hero) studded affair with as much as 47 heroes dropping all else to come get pummeled by Thanos? Well, thanks to that tidbit and the way Guardians of the Galaxy left off, everyone basically assumed the long awaited King Groot would be the one we get to see in Avengers Infinity War (teen Groot should have grown in to Adult then King Groot before Infinity Wars). It is safe to say, we can all do away with that assumption. Director James Gunn was recently asked which Groot would appear in Avengers: Infinity War, and to our chagrin he revealed it’s Teen Groot.

During an interview, Gunn was asked if Groot would look the same like he did in the Guardians Vol. 2 post-credit scene (as Teen Groot) in his next movie appearance, Avengers: Infinity War. That answer was in the affirmative.

“[Teen Groot] is exactly the same,” Gunn opened up. “That’s exactly the Groot we designed for Infinity War. Well, basically those are at the same time.”

Groot has gone through four major changes in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies and per the comics, has 2 other stages yet to be visited. For most of the first movie, he was normal adult Groot, but in the climactic battle with Ronan the Accuser, Groot sacrifices himself and is blown up. Rocket gathers some parts of him and regrows him into Baby Groot (stage one). By the time Vol. 2 rolls around, Baby Groot (stage two) is a little bigger and can now walk. By the end of the movie he has grown into Teen Groot and he’ll stay that way in Infinity War.

We should eventually see the return of adult Groot by Avengers 4 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Avengers: Infinity War will be in theaters May 4, 2018.
