7 free essential android Apps Nigerians should have in 2017

We have not had must have android apps ever on here, but a casual acquaintance recently asked what I’d recommend on his phone so this was birthed. I hope it reaches across anyone looking to setup their phone one of these days.

NB: Apps like Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook and BlackBerry Messenger do not make it on this list because they have literally become the first apps almost every one loads on their phone right off the bat.

Truecaller. Because we get calls from unknown numbers every other day from numbers we do not have on our contacts list and this really comes in handy whether you are trying to ignore annoying calls from your network advertising one service or the other or (especially for the women) when you are trying to field calls from Speed Darlington and his likes. The true caller app is free on the Playstore.

Your Bank App. Let’s face it, the world has gone electronic double that for consumer services. From the comfort of your home, via your phone, you can pay countless utility bills. From DSTV to recharging your phone for call credits, Checking your account balance, making transfers etc, and the functionality is ever expanding.  For whichever bank caters to your funds, the App is free on the Playstore.

Socratic. This is a problem solving App. No, it will not fix your empty bank account problem. That requires hard work and innovation which sadly there is no app for. Remember those mathematical equations where you can take photos of math problems and you immediately get a solution? Socratic is that and a whole lot more. Because not only does it give you the solution, it shows you every step of the working. It does not stop there; it can also answer worded questions as well. Simply take a photo of the word and it gives you a detailed answer, video answer or diagrammatic representation. Socratic is free on the Playstore.

TV Time. If you spend any time at all watching any tv series, this is literally the one App you need. It keeps track of all your shows and even has a calendar reminding you when they will air. But to be honest, my one favorite feature is this app is a great way to meet like minded people (as far as shows go anyway). It exposes you to a community of individuals watching whatever show you may be following where you can interact and share your thoughts on why you think Jon Snow and Daeny should just get married making Jon step father to the dragons. TV Time is free on the Playstore.

Reverse Dictionary. Have you ever been in that situation where you know the definition of a word or you know the characteristics of the word but you just can’t remember the word? Well that is where this App comes in. The app even lets you search by words that sound like a certain other word e.g cat, fat, rat etc. Reverse dictionary is free on the Playstore

Dictionary. ………………………………..are you seriously waiting for me to explain why a dictionary is essential on your phone? There are a vast number of free dictionaries to pick from on the Playstore but my favorite is Merriam Webster.

Shazam. My kid brother actually exposed me to the awesomeness of this App. Ever been in a situation where a song is playing off the radio, you really like it but you have no way of knowing who the artist is or song title? Shazam has you covered. Just launch the App and click the button on the screen, point your phone in the general direction of music source and seconds later, you get a song title and Artist name. Even helps you discover similar songs and artists affiliated to your recently discovered artist. It is THAT effective an App. And yeah, it also is free.

This list will be updated over time. Feel free to suggest other essential Apps I did not list or may be un-aware.
